BMW Z3 / MZ3’s suffer from one main weak point. The trunk floor / rear subframe mount have weak spot welds that hold it all together. There are kits out there such as Randy’s supremely engineered complete kit, Randy’s site found here: Randy Forbes Wedbsite
However, not all customers can afford or really need to have a full upgrade done on the rear. The first car that I did I spoke in length with Randy about just rewelding the spot welds and he gave it a 50/50 chance of success for cars where the welds have just started to pop. With that in mind I have been able to do several successful repairs over the years and so far no additional failure from the cars that I have done. I will let the pictures tell the story of how this fairly simple repair can be done. Just keep in mind that eventually you will have to do the full repair using Randy’s kit. Either way you choose I can do the work, I look forward to working with you!
The first few pictures are before repair, as you can see the spot welds are just starting to pop.
It is very important that you take out the ECU when welding on the car, surges can cause a lot of issues with the BMW ECU’s
Step one you must remove all of the OE seam sealer so that you have access to make the weld along the drivers side of the trunk floor. These next few pictures show the finished weld prior to getting its new seam sealer and paint. Last few pictures show the finish product with all panels reinstalled.
